what are the features in the programme which suggest tv crime drama
The features that suggest that Hawaii 5 o is a crime drama is that the characters that are in the programme are mostly police this means that there is likely going to be something happen to someone who lives their, it is most typically a murder or kidnapping in these types of programmes and the police have to solve the murder and catch the criminal who committed the crime.
Another feature that suggests that this is a crime drama is that in all of the episodes individuals and/or groups of people commit crimes which instantly direct the genre to being some sort of crime show, as there isn't much comedy in the program and more action then the only other genre it could be would be crime drama
what is the sub genres or hybridity
the sub genres of Hawaii 5 o is action and partly adventure, this is because in most of the episodes there would be some sort of crime such as a murder, kidnapping or shootout between the police and the criminals which will lead onto them finding out about another crime, there is also a few episodes where there will be a car chase or fight scene in which the criminal escapes and the police have to find them again. Adventure comes into this genre slightly because in some of the series there is an overall criminal mastermind that is behind a lot of the crimes that happen and in each episode they get closer and closer to catching them then in the last episode they either catch them or it would end in in cliffhanger.
how does it tell its story (narrative handout)
Hawaii 5 o tells its story by using a twist on Todorov's theory of equilibrium as in the beginning of the show there is peace and everyone is happy and northing has gone wrong (equilibrium) before it is disturbed by people kidnapping a police officer (disruption), the next day the police department think that the kidnapped officer is taking a day off but when he doesn't answer his phone then the 3rd stage of the theory happens where the officers turn up to his house and realises that there is something wrong and he has been kidnapped (recognition of disruption) this then leads to the kidnapped officer realising that he has been smuggled into prison and attempts to inform guards that he is with the police (attempts to repair disruption) but he does not realise that some of the guards have been bribed by the prison inmates and throw him in with an inmate that the officer had put away years before. whilst all of this is happening the officers back at the department are doing everything to try and find out where he is by interrogating people that have some sort of grudge. this is where they stumble across a man who does know where he is but is quite unwilling to tell them anything, after a while the interrogate him enough to tell them where the kidnapped officer is, but by this time the inmates have taken over the prison and the Hawaii 5 o team breach into the prison and look for the officer whilst stopping inmates from killing the guards, after they find the officer and stopped the prison riot it leads you on to think that everything is fine but one of the officers boyfriend is very suspicious and in the past used to be a criminal which then makes the audience think that he has gone back to his old ways. this is where the twist is because everything seems fine to everyone but behind the scenes there is a big potential crime about to take place
